Don’t forget soffits and fascia

Don’t forget that replacing your home’s siding also requires a look at your soffits and fascia. Learn more about what they are and why they matter below.

What to know about soffits

Protecting your home against structural damage, moisture and insects means taking soffit and fascia into consideration.

Soffits are the siding under your roof’s overhang. They protect your home’s rafters from the elements, insects and rain. Soffits also provide ventilation for your roof, and attic or crawlspace. You’ll know you need them replaced if you can see holes or cracks in the boards. Soft patches and evidence of asbestos are also signs that it’s time for a replacement. Two types of soffits can be purchased: solid or vented. Most homeowners purchase a combination of both that is then alternated around a home’s exterior. This provides adequate ventilation and weatherproofing.

What to know about fascia

Fascia is the exposed board you see on the front of your roof’s overhang. It forms a band that can be seen from the street. Homeowners usually replace fascia at the same time as gutters or soffits. It can lower costs to do both at once. It can also make sense to do both or even all three at once, because soffits, gutters and fascia have many overlaps. Price is dependent on the size of your home’s eaves, level of detailing and other factors.

The value of soffits and fascia

You probably already know that new siding can improve home resale value. But outside of curb appeal, weatherproofing also helps preserve structural integrity and longevity. Were it not for soffit and fascia, your gutters and roof would suffer. So would your attic or crawlspace. Moisture problems are common with inadequate or damaged soffit and fascia. So it’s important to keep everything in working order. Professional installation is usually advised, because of the high costs associated with improper installation.
